Video Game Developers – Part 3

In our earlier parts we covered some of the major names in video game production. Of course, there are literally hundreds of games software developers, so our list will continue. Read part 3 of 4 to find out more about some of the biggest and best software houses, their stories and of course their top games.

Electronic Arts

Without question Electronic Arts are one of the biggest video game developers. They are currently producing games under a series of different brands, including:

  • EA Sports
  • EA Maxis
  • EA All Play
  • EA Worldwide Studios

Each software arm is responsible for development and continuation of the field that they are in. It must seem like a whirlwind journey from their birth in 1982 to over $3 billion revenue creators in 2016. Electronic Arts have grown at an amazing pace, thanks largely to the quality of the game titles that they have produced.

Perhaps the biggest area of software development comes under the umbrella of EA Sports. It is almost unimaginable that any self-respecting football (soccer) fan has never played one of the FIFA series of games. The “it’s in the game” catchphrase that you hear so many times on television and radio advertising is synonymous with the leading sports brand game creator of all time. Current titles include:

  • Madden
  • PGA Tour
  • NHL
  • FIFA
  • NBA Live
  • UFC

The advent of online gaming has assisted in bringing these games into the living-rooms of millions of gamers around the globe. The desire for games players to beat each other is as strong as the software houses desires to produce the most realistic, life-like games around.

Guerrilla Games

Dutch outfit Guerrilla Games are based in Amsterdam and are now a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment. They have been producing video games since 2000 and are best-known for the Killzone series which is released exclusively for the PlayStation games console. Prior to the acquisition by Sony, Guerrilla Games were owned by the Dutch media conglomerate of Lost Boys. The software house operated under the title of Lost Boys Games. Success has come their way largely thanks to a very strong following of the already mentioned Killzone series. The original game concept was launched on PlayStation back in 2004, other titles in the series include:

  • Killzone: Liberation – 2006
  • Killzone 2 – 2009
  • Killzone 3 – 2011
  • Killzone Shadow Fall – 2013
  • Horizon Zero Dawn – 2017

The game itself takes the form of a 1st person shooter, set in the 24th century and contains some of the most gruesome battles ever to be seen outside of the real-world. Reviews from influential industry critics have always been highly favourable and without question has helped to shape the popularity of this cult series of games. PSM – PlayStation Magazine once quoted “Graphically stunning” and went onto say “and hits the mark in so many ways”. This was part 3 in our 4-part series covering some of the best video game developers in the world. Stay tuned for the next post when we uncover some more game developers, and their greatest hit games.
