Video Game Developers – Part 1
Video game quality continues to improve, with no real sign of letting up. Games are more realistic, involving, life-like than ever before, with several of the top video game developers to thank. This blog post is the 1st of a 4-part series that takes a closer look at some of these video game developers, their best-known games. We aim to unveil a few pieces of information that you might not already know.
Established in 2007, 343 Industries is part of Microsoft Studios and have been largely responsible for production of the Halo series of games. Their name came about from one of the lead characters in the Halo series, character 343 Guilty Spark. As you might expect from a Microsoft owned organization, 343 Industries produce software for the Windows and Xbox console. Widely heralded as the best first-person shooters (FPS) to adorn any type of console, Halo has amassed fans on a global scale. Games are sold in multi-millions to a huge range of players in every corner of the world.
This Santa Monica software division dates back to 1979 and has produced some of the best-known, most-played video games around the world. They have earned respect as the world’s first independent producer and distributor for console games, with initial games being made for the Atari 2600 console. Prior to this auspicious occurrence, console producers had been responsible for all software development for their own systems.
An impressive series of acquisitions and mergers takes us up to today, with Activision Blizzard the correct and proper trading title. Instantly recognized games include:
- Pitfall – 1982
- Battlezone – 1998
- Call of Duty series – 2003 to present
- Doom 3 – 2004
- Total War – 2004
- Crash Bandicoot series – 2008 to present
- Destiny – 2014 to present
Pretty much anything that Activision are involved with is destined to be a huge success. An example of this is the Call of Duty series making more revenue than any other game type in 2016.
Bandai Namco Studios
The heavyweight games house, based in Tokyo, Japan were born in 2006. A merger between 2 of the biggest houses in the world, namely Namco and Bandai created the new company. Although their core publisher location is still Japan, Bandai Namco Studies are now much more of a global player. A series of offices in North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania have helped the company to raise its global profile to new heights. Owners of the Pac-Man and Tekken franchises is a pretty cool thing to be remembered for. However, Bandai Namco Studios are much more than just that. Over the years they have produced other classics, including:
- Ace of Combat series
- Soul series
- Katamari series
To assist with overall appeal, most games are now produced on Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. There is no doubting the quality of some of the games that these 3 heavyweight producers have put together.
